Library Associates Companies (LAC) seeks skilled Archivist to assist with short-term archives assessment project for an academic library in Bowie, MD. Position available immediately.
Project Scope:
· Client archives collection is comprised of approximately 170 boxes of materials, including seminar papers, papers of past Presidents and other individuals, phono records, photographs, brochures, artifacts and similar archival materials; and approximately 100 linear feet of shelving holding cataloged Special Collection monographs. Rare materials requiring special attention include old maps. Contents lists are available for some but not all of the boxes. The Library has not been able to devote more than minimal attention to the archives, so most of the materials are in an “as-delivered” state of organization and accessibility.
Project Responsibilities include:
· Assist in the initial evaluation of Client materials, set up an organization plan and prepare a basic inventory of the collection; and prepare a collection statement, recommendations for proper storage, an estimate of the costs to maintain the archives, and an assessment of the archives’ value to the institution that can be used to solicit grant or other support.
· Inventory of box level archives collection, which can function as a rudimentary finding aid; a means of accessing the materials in the collection; and an organization system for the collection.
· Long-term responsibilities would include recommendations for proper storage of archival materials; a system for generating electronic records for archival items that can be incorporated into the Library’s online catalog; a collection policy for the archives; recommendations for digitization; and an assessment of the value of the collection, labor and materials necessary for long-term archives maintenance.
Qualifications:
· MLS from an accredited library school with minimum of three years related experience.
