JOB TITLE: Archivist
SUPERVISOR: Historical Studies - Social Science Librarian
Background:
Established formally in 1986, the archival collections measure approximately 630 linear feet and the collections include correspondence related to the administration of the Institute, oral history recordings and transcripts, records of the Electronic Computer Project, and a small photograph collection. A grant from the Leon Levy Foundation will enable the Institute to establish the Shelby White and Leon Levy Archives Center and allow the Institute to expand the collection's scope and begin collecting and processing the personal papers of faculty and other key individuals affiliated with the Institute.
Duties and Responsibilities:
1. Under the general direction of the Librarian, the Archivist will oversee the collection management and public access to the Archives of the Institute, developing and refining access guidelines and ensuring that archival processing meets nationally accepted standards.
2. With the support of an Archival Assistant, will handle on-site and remote archival requests, collection processing, the creation of EAD and other electronic and print finding aids.
3. Provide in-depth reference services and lead the collection development of archival materials.
4. Manage digital collections and lead efforts to preserve 'born digital' archival materials.
5. Guide and develop the ongoing oral history project.
6. Responsible for tracking and documenting art and artifacts in the Institute's possession.
7. Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
1. Graduate degree as well as at least three years of professional experience in archival work required.
2. Excellent written and oral communication and interpersonal skills as well as strong computer skills required.
3. Familiarity with EAD mark-up of finding aids as well as demonstrated expertise with digital preservation and access techniques required.
4. Knowledge of one or more western European languages as well as supervisory experience preferred.
5. Some familiarity with the Archivists' Toolkit as well as knowledge of standards for digital imaging and maintaining digital assets and meta data also preferred.
