All,

This post is in response to an ARSClist thread I started on October 20th called "UN Planning Sessions (1945)."

QUOTE
All,

We have 146 16" discs of the UN planning sessions in San Francisco, 1945.

The ones we've played anyway appear to be NBC radio broadcasts. We're considering these taking on
as a new project; first however, I need to know if copies of these recordings exist elsewhere. If so, then
we might reconsider or (better) consider partnering with other institutions to get these done in full.

Here's a link to our finding aid (such as it is): http://www.oac.cdlib.org/findaid/ark:/13030/tf2f59n5jz/

Any info you might have is appreciated.

thanks,
Brandon

There were several informed and helpful replies, but questions remained about the appearance of the discs
and corresponding sleeves. Below are some snaps of two different discs, one from the opening sessions on
25 April 1945, the other the signing of the UN charter on 26 June..

25 Apr 1945:

26 June 1945:

The pre-printed labels indicate that they were created for the Hoover Library. Only the dates and names
of each program (ex: "Signing of the Charter," etc) were created at the time of the recording.

Who, besides LC, has copies of these? And do they likewise show a San Francisco street address for NBC?

thanks,
Brandon

Alas, for some reason flickr is not displaying the images.

I am working on the Howard Pyle collection at ASU. Howard Pyle was a former Arizona governor, and prior to that he had been a war and later a news correspondent. Among his assignments were the early UN meetings in San Francisco. The recordings are more "man in the street" in style, but he meets up with some interesting NBC folks during the interview like Lloyd Creepmore (sp? - chief of NBC's sound effects division). At the time, he was working for the Arizona Broadcasting Company ("ABC") and was broadcast on KTAR in Arizona.

Pyle's April 29, 1945 UN interviews are on glass discs.

I don't have images handy for the UN interview labels on glass, but I have some later NBC San Francisco label images from September 1945 if that might be useful.

Images are back. (Thanks, by the way.) Are these labels consistent with the Pyle discs?
