This full-day class overviews the current status of U.S. copyright law and its impact on library services. Emphasis is on the copyright status of print, audiovisual and electronic information, as well as computer programs. Students will focus on the basics of copyright law, learn to evaluate potential uses of copyrighted works in libraries and learn to apply considerations for formulating institutional policies. Specific provisions of the U.S. Copyright Act and the congressional and ALA guidelines will be reviewed, along with recent court decisions relating to copyright infringement and libraries and educational institutions.
